Results of 2022 General Election

image-20221202101409-1.pngRESULTS OF THE 2022 GENERAL ELECTION

(as of November 22, 2022)

Elections bring change; the 2022 election brought historic change to Maryland.  Wes Moore will be the State’s first – and the nation’s third elected  – Black Governor.  His running mate – former Delegate Aruna Miller – became the first immigrant and the first Asian American official elected statewide.  Delegate Brooke Lierman was elected Comptroller, becoming the first woman elected directly to Statewide office.  Attorney General-elect Anthony Brown became the first Black Attorney General in Maryland.

These election results and the recent selection of Treasurer Dereck Davis by the General Assembly means Maryland will have a new Board of Public Works.  While the election results did not produce significant changes in the General Assembly, the House and Senate have experienced major changes in leadership.  Since January 2020, we have a new President of the Senate Bill Ferguson; the first female and first Black Speaker of the House Adrienne Jones; 3 of 4 Senate standing committee chairs have been appointed; and 4 of 6 House standing committee chairs have been appointed.

Turnover in the General Assembly will be lighter than prior election years – at least for the time being.  It is possible that some members will accept roles in the new Moore Administration, which would alter the turnover percentages.  Those changes and most committee assignments will remain unsettled until the end of the year.

Status of the Senate of Maryland

The charts below summarize the results of the primary election for members of the Maryland Senate.  There are several formats:

Senate changes by District.

Senate changes with members listed alphabetically.

In the main Senate charts, green means the member won re-election and will be returning to the Senate.  Red means the member lost, retired, or ran for another office (each member's circumstances are noted).

Senate Membership8 of the 47 Senators (17%) will be new.  The 6 Senators-elect from decided races are a former Delegate, 4 current Delegates, and a former Senator.  Democrats hold a 32-15 majority in the Senate.  That margin will now be 34-13.

Status of the House of Delegates

The charts below summarize the results of the election for members of the House of Delegates.  There are several formats:

House changes by District.

House changes with members listed alphabetically.

In the House charts, green means the member won re-election and will be returning to the House.  Red means the member lost, retired, or ran for another office (each member's circumstances are noted).  When indicating who replaced an outgoing Delegate, the new Delegate's name will appear in bold blue if it is a change in the seat from Republican to Democrat, and bold red if the seat turned from Democrat to Republican. (NOTE – districts were redrawn for this election, causing some districts to be eliminated or vacant; changes are noted at the end of the charts).

House membership - Of the 141 House members, 38 will be new (27%).  (including the new Delegate appointed to fill the seat of Del. Eric Luedtke who will be joining Governor-Elect Moore’s Administration.

House Party Affiliation - Going into the election, Democrats held a 99-42 margin.   That margin rose to 102-39.
