Course Objectives: 

  • Review the importance of nonverbal communication, verbal communication, and the four communication styles.
  • Identify general characteristics of persons living with IDD across the lifespan.
  • Understand how communication is impacted by the intersection of trauma, the brain, and diagnoses across the lifespan.
  • Determine how behavior functions as communication.
  • Learn different strategies to affirm behaviors.
  • Develop and practice strategies to incorporate in daily work to increase assertive communication of clients.

Facilitator: Shannon McFadden, MS, CPRP, CFRP is a former special educator, owner and operator of an educational consulting firm, and the Director of Behavioral Health Services for a non-profit organization. Shannon has spent most of her career advocating for our most vulnerable citizens, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Passionate about her work, Shannon works to assist vulnerable members of the community with finding their voice and living their lives to fullest. She currently resides in Baltimore County, with her daughter, Sharise, and their two dogs.
